WIN-CENS must be used if you are to transcribe the 1841
Census. However, although you may have WIN/95, if your processor speed is under 266Mhz and
you are running in less than 16 megabytes of RAM, then the response speed from some of
WIN-CENS' components may not be as you might like, and the DOS version may be better for you.
Please note though it has been found that this software generally runs better in an Intel Pentium processor
machine, the problem on mainly non-Pentium machines being the use of the <Alt> key as an alternative
to mouse click on buttons. However, if you find that you experience problems in using the <Alt>
key, you will be able to disable that facility.
It is advisable that if you are using a non-MS mouse, that you install the manufacturer's latest mouse driver. This applies to laptops as well as PC's, and Toshiba systems/mice in particular.
PLEASE NOTE: before you start using WIN-CENS for real, after doing the tutorial it shouldbe a must to use the TEST feature for say 20 entries, to ensure that WIN-CENS works
happily on your machine. (If you have been using DOS/IN-CENS, note that WIN-CENS does not interfere withDOS/IN-CENS files in any way.) If youfind that WIN-CENS does not respond properly on your machine, PLEASE inform me with details of what is
wrong. After what I've written, please DO NOT be afraid to try WIN-CENS !!...you'll probably find you like it !!The chances of it not working properly on your machine are quite low, unless your machine is (say)
more than 3 years old.
However, if you think that DOS/IN-CENS may be better for you, please contact me, and do NOT attempt to download this (WIN-CENS) version.
To operate the IN-CENS software, you need to have the core software (consisting of 3 of the above4 components, comprising one download file) and alsoa set of parameter files related specifically to the census year and county you are to transcribe.
THEREFORE....YOU NEED TO DOWNLOAD 2 SETS OF FILES
(1) the IN-CENS Software,
and(2) IN-CENS Files for the Census Year and County required
You may now come off line (off the web), but keep the floppy disk in its drive.
Then continue with the Installation Instructions (scroll down) forinformation on how to install the software.
If any of these processes fail, please do not hesitate to contact me
You will then be presented with the pathname which has been chosen for you, which is where IN-CENS will be located. If you wish to install on a different drive letter than that presented, please change to the letter required. If you intend to be transcribing multiple counties, you have to do a separate installation for each county, and in which case I would suggest changing the pathname to "\Program Files\in_censXXX", where XXX is the county code of the county to be transcribed.Otherwise, please leave the drive letter and pathnameas selected, and if you were formerly using DOS/IN-CENS, do not let the first level of the pathnamehave the value of 'ukcensus'.
Take a note of the Pathname, and press the Start button. The installation then proceeds, and will finish with some notes on what will happen next.Read these notes. There is a little more to do yet. Press 'OK' to proceed further, when ready.
TRANSFERRING FROM THE 'OLD' IN-CENS
You can transfer to the new IN-CENS (WIN-CENS) from DOS/IN-CENS in the middle of a Piece transcription. However, before doing so, it is best to complete the Tutorial to gain familiarity with thenew software before proceeding further. Also, you will need to complete the 'End of Tutorial'procedure stated in the Tutorial documentation. For safety's sake, also ensure you have taken afloppy backup of the 'old' IN-CENS data files. Then, find the location of the new IN-CENS software. If you have not kept a note of the location, then by selectingStart > Programs, you will find an entry for in_cens: select this and then right-click on the WIN-CENSicon. Select Properties. In the box "Start in:" will be found the pathnmame you need, except that youwill need to add a "\data" suffix. So if the pathname found is "\Program Files\in_cens", the extendedpathname will become "\Program Files\in_cens\data".
You now need to copy the Piece file (e.g. RG121234.DAT) using Microsoft Explorer from"\ukcensus\data" into the folder "\Program Files\in_cens\data" (or other folder as described above). One method of doing this would be by the use of two Explorer windows - one topoint to the destination folder, and the other window to point to \ukcensus\data.Then drag and drop (with finger on the <Ctrl> key - to cause a "copy" instead of "move")all the required piece files (e.g. RG121234.DAT) from \ukcensus\data into the new folder.Do the same if you have a mynotes.txt file. That is all that is required.
